Since the Mazda CX-5 first hit the scene, it has remained one of the highest-rated small crossovers on the market. It has been applauded for its excellent blend of performance and efficiency and its NHTSA five-star overall safety rating enables families to ride with extra peace of mind. But how does is stack up against one of its main competitors, the Honda CRV? Let’s find out:

Performance
The 2019 CX-5 has a turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, which is also offered in the CX-9 and the Mazda6. The new turbo four makes 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, assuming the use of premium fuel. With the new turbo, a FWD CX-5 returns 23 mpg city/28 mpg hwy/25 mpg combined, while AWD models achieve 22 mpg city/27 mpg hwy/24 mpg combined.
The CR-V entry-level LX models come with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder making 184 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Above the base model, the CR-V comes with a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder making 190 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of engine, all CR-Vs come with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and can be equipped with optional all-wheel drive
Interior
The Mazda CX-5 has a luxurious interior, offering a leather encased dashboard and console. The infotainment screen is mounted atop the dash and controlled by a rotary knob near the gearshift on the center console. There is a minimal amount of plastic used. The vents are trimmed in a brushed aluminum finish, while unique looking inserts trim the doors and the dash.
The CR-V’s center infotainment screen is located lower on the dash than it is on the CX-5. Interior color options are either black or gray, regardless of whether the vehicle is optioned with fabric or leather. The CR-V’s interior is much less premium than that of the CX-5.
Safety
Standard on the CX-5 are forward-collision warning with front automated emergency braking and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic assist. Touring models and up get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist and rear parking sensors.
The 2019 CR-Vs, aside from the base LX model, come with a full range of active safety technology. This includes forward-collision warning with front automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic assist, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist and automatic high beams.
Reliability
CR-V and CX-5 buyers should both see above-average reliability and Mazda offer 3 year/36,000 mile basic and 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranties, which is for the most part consistent with the competition.
